Mic not working in Discord, Zoom, Teams or Google Meet

Updated · 2 min read

If your microphone passes the mic test here but nobody can hear you in a call, the problem is in the app. Each app keeps its own input setting, and it doesn't always follow Windows or macOS.

First: test your mic outside the app

Run the mic test on this site with the same headset or microphone. If the meter moves, your hardware and system settings are fine. That narrows the fix down to the app settings below.

Discord

  1. Open User Settings (the gear next to your name) → Voice & Video.
  2. Under Input Device, choose your microphone by name rather than "Default".
  3. Use "Let's Check" to watch the level bar while you talk.
  4. If you use Voice Activity, turn off "Automatically determine input sensitivity" and drag the slider left until your voice lights up the bar.
  5. If nothing works, click "Reset Voice Settings" at the bottom of the page.

Zoom

  1. Open Settings → Audio.
  2. Under Microphone, pick your device and press "Test Mic".
  3. Untick "Automatically adjust microphone volume" if your level keeps dropping.
  4. In a meeting, check that the mic icon at the bottom left isn't crossed out, and that the host hasn't muted everyone.

Microsoft Teams

  1. Click the three dots next to your profile picture → Settings → Devices.
  2. Choose your microphone under Audio settings, then use "Make a test call" to record and hear yourself.
  3. In the browser version, allow microphone access when the address bar asks.

Google Meet

  1. In a meeting, click the three dots → Settings → Audio.
  2. Pick your microphone and talk. The small dots next to its name should move.
  3. If Meet says the mic is blocked, click the lock icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload.

Still silent? Common causes

  • Another app is holding the mic. Close OBS, other call apps and browser tabs, then rejoin.
  • You joined with "Computer audio" off or by phone. Rejoin with computer audio.
  • A Bluetooth headset switched to the wrong profile. Disconnect and reconnect it, then pick its "Headset" or "Hands-free" input.
  • Noise suppression is too aggressive. Lower it to Low or Auto and test again.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't people hear me on Discord when my mic works?

Discord is probably using a different input device or the sensitivity threshold is too high. Choose your mic by name in Voice & Video and lower the input sensitivity.

How do I test my mic before a Zoom call?

Open the mic test on this site, or in Zoom go to Settings → Audio → Test Mic. Both take about five seconds.
